Where there is dark there is light. Where there is day, there is night. The everlasting battle between good and evil has been a theme for great storytelling throughout history. It’s no wonder that Angel and Devil costumes are some of the most popular costumes for Halloween night. What is it about representing pure evil, or pure benevolence that is so captivating? I thought I’d dig a bit deeper into this theme, and also how to best pull off the look with some costumes for sale or by doing it yourself.
Angel Costume
Why is dressing up as an angel so much fun? Not only do angels happen to look like gods and goddesses, they are known for their supernatural and righteous powers. They are the guardians of the weak, soldiers fighting in a grandiose battle against the powers of evil. They are also caretakers and those who answer our prayers. Angels can provide holy beverages for their friends and fulfill the hopes and dreams of those around them.

Do It Yourself Angel Costume
Putting together a homemade angel costume can be surprisingly easy. The key is to bring on the whites! For the ladies, a white dress, or skirt and tank top work best, although there are a myriad of other variations that work great. For the gents, white pants, and a white shirt lays down a great foundation. From there, you will need your wings and a halo. For the wings, by getting creative with some scotch tape, wire hangers and cardboard covered in feathers made of cut outs of white paper. The halo can extend from your wings with another wire hanger. Make the halo shape that will float above your head with the wire hanger and then wrap with with a golden pipe cleaner or tinsel if have it, spiraling around the halo as you go.
Dark Angel Costume
Are you feeling like you’re not quite innocent enough to pull off the pure angel costume? A dark angel might be the right choice for you. A dark angel has fallen from heaven, and now hovers somewhere between heaven and hell. As far as angel and devil costumes go, this is basically a mix of both. The dark angel still fights for good (generally), but tends to have an edge, and doesn’t like to follow the rules.

Do It Yourself Dark Angel Costume
Making the dark angel costume follows similar steps to making an angel costume (see above), but the main difference is in the colors. The outfit works well in black or red, or a blend of the two. Feel free to keep some white as that helps to show that you still have a good side. Also, make sure to use black wings (whether they are made with construction paper or another material).
Devil Costume
Who doesn’t want to be big, red, buff and ugly with unlimited evil powers for one day? Don’t get me wrong, you can also pull off a cute devil or even a sexy devil if you do it right! But something about being able to play the bad guy or bad girl, the baddest of the bad, is kind of fun. Be prepared because while dressed as a devil everyone will expect you to be on your worst behavior. You will likely run into at least an angel or two that you can clash with and you might even find another devil or demon to align with for the night.

Do It Yourself Devil Costume
A simple devil costume is even easier to put together than angel costumes. Similar to dark angels, the focus should be on red and black colors, with red being the primary. A dress, t-shirt, long-sleeved t-shirt, tank top, pants skirt, gown, etc. all will work well. The key additions are devil’s horns. You can also make these fairly easily, also using wire hangers, red construction paper and Skotch tape. Lastly, you may want to add a prop – every devil needs a pitch fork. We suggest using a broomstick for the core, and then adding three prongs to one end by cutting out cardboard covered in read construction paper and taping it all together.
Devil Costume Makeup
While not essential, doing a nice makeup job can really add some nice finishing touches. I’ve included a few ideas on how to do it right with some tutorials for your viewing pleasure.
