Who is the knight in shining armor that the city looks to in moments of civil unrest? Who do you call when there is a hostage situation and you need the police force’s top tactical team on hand? You call the most elite force, the swat team! Do you have what it takes to be part of this badass crime stopping team? Of course you do, its Halloween! All you need is a SWAT team costume!
What is a SWAT Team?
SWAT stands for Special Weapons and Tactics. The SWAT division was formed in the 1960’s in response to sniper attacks against civilians and cops during and surrounding the Watts riot. Since then the team has evolved and now is known for being the top urban infiltration unit in the world. They deal with everything from bank robberies and barricaded hostage situations to anti-terrorism.
Do It Yourself SWAT Team Costume
What’s the best way to put together a SWAT team Halloween costume if you want to do it yourself? The good news: they are simple! They wear all black (or dark blue, or dark green), and so you can throw on a long sleeved shirt, and matching sweat pants or parachute pants if you’ve got them. Take some masking tape and spell out SWAT on your front and back. Black boots go best, but any black or dark colored shoes will do. Do you have a black helmet (for biking/skating/other)? Throw it on! Otherwise, you can also make a makeshift helmet by cutting an empty 1 gallon container (for milk or water) in half and spray painting it black. Then poke one hole on either side and run some yarn through it as a chinstrap and you’re good to go. You can also use a black bandana or plain black ball cap if you have them handy. Your head gear along with some aviator sunglasses will pull the costume together nicely.
